Book 62 -- A Bit on Halflings (last revised 11/23/02)

Sadie has asked me to say a thing or two about the Halflings.
Unfortunately I don't have much, but share with all of you what I do
have below.

The Halflings of the lands are generally separated between old and
new kin. The old kin are the Halflings who have adjusted to life in
Varna, and tend to their farms, shops, and homes. The new kin have
never longed for the quiet life, but love the life of the road. Many
new kin families have traveling shows that they set up in many of the
key villages of the area trading, performing, and maybe a little
pilfering. The new kin are the main source of information for many of
the far flung communities of Varna and Samerien.

The old kin generally trace their blood lines back to the founding
years of Varna. Halflings generally not being able to protect
themselves, would ingratiate themselves to the tallies, in Varna,
humans and elves, and would create a settlements for themselves. The
old kin favor safety, comfort, good food, drink, and good cheer.

The new kin followed the dwarves from the north, away from the goblin
invaders. The new kin, in the harsh, barren lands never created
settled communities, but rather settlements of caravans. The
traveling shows of today are the remnants of those caravans of the
past, that some old Halflings remember numbered 500 wagons. Many new
kin's ancestors also had tasted the bitter pill of enslavement that
the later generations will not soon forget, because of all the tales
of woe, defiance, and death that the new kin children learn to recite
from an early age. Freedom, one's friends and family, the open road,
and a good song are what drive the new kin.

Since the Halflings never created a nation or kingdom, but rather
settlements on the periphery of nations belonging to other races,
they have no formal written history, but rich oral history of each
extended family of the perseverance, wit, or cleverness of one
ancestor or another. This stranger in your own home mentality
generally gives the Halfling a tolerance of others that very few
other races or individuals can match.

The gods of Halflings, if any ever existed, are long forgotten.
Halflings tend to worship deities that most help them in their daily
lives. Old kin worship Safandi, and new kin worship Ghorbug, and
minor deities of travelers, merchants, or artists.
