Book 70 -- History of Elves and Dark Elves, Part 2 (last revised 11/23/02)
by Einsiedler
Xeno has been bothering for me to tell him the Dark Elves side of the
story in the feud between them and the surface elves.
The dark elves agree to this much. Back in the mists of time, before
any current living elf was alive, when the Grand Forest covered most
of the lands, before the humans could walk erect, before the dwarves
came from the earth's belly, the elven tribes ruled supreme. Each of
the tribes ruled a portion of the forest and conflict always arose.
The rivalry between the various tribes was extreme. The elves might
have lived in harmony with nature, they could never live in harmony
with each other.
Over time the elves, believed that the conflicts of the tribes culled
the tribes of the weaker members of the race, and left only the
strongest, smartest, fastest, hardiest of the clan. The elves had
truly come to believe in the survival of the fittest.
During the Festival of Life, in the spring, a truce was imposed by
tradition, and the tribes would meet in the clearing in the center of
the forest where the Pillars of the Past stood. During the
festival, the various tribes would have tournaments of skill to
celebrate the elf the best epitomized all that was elven.
Fonrein, was the winner of that contest. As tradition dictated,
Fonrein was allowed to spend a day and a night under the Pillars.
The Pillars that stood the test of time. Fonrein would be allowed to
study the Pillars as was her right by tradition for winning the days
contest, and all knowledge she would gain would be hers to keep.
During Fonrein's contemplation, two twin sisters, strangers appeared
during the festival. The Strangers offered to explain the riddle of
the Pillars. However there would be conditions set for such
knowledge. The Lute Carrying Stranger would only share her knowledge
with all the tribes sharing equally in such knowledge if all the
elves swore loyalty to her and follow her laws in using the knowledge
she would bestow upon the elves. The Flute Carrying Stranger would
only share her knowledge with Fonrein the strongest, most powerful,
wisest of the elves. Only one or the other gift was available to the
elves, not both. Fonrein would have one day to decide.
Fonrein contacted a council of all the elven tribes, and the elven
tribes agreed that Fonrein should accept the Flute Carrying
Stranger's offer since it did not require a commitment from the whole
elven race. Fonrein approached the Flute Carrying Stranger and asked
for her gift. The gift was that of magic. Magic was the answer to
the riddle. The knowledge of magic was bestowed upon her.
Fonrein approached the elven council to show them what she was
bestowed. The other elves were scared and dismayed, and immediately
set upon her. Fonrein fought them off with all her new found powers
and quickly made for her tribes camp. Battles occurred between the
elves, clan versus clan, during the sacred truce of the elves for the
first time in any living memory. Fonrein and her clan made for their
homewoods. Battling enemies for every step.
The alliance of elves approached the Lute Carrying Stranger and asked
for help. The First Stranger refused the elves because of their
selfish part played in the conflict. The First Stranger however was
thirsting for adulation and worship and she called upon two of her
kinfolk, Dyrellan and Anvarri to teach the elves magic to battle
Fonrein. In return for the gifts, the elven tribes mercilessly drove
and rid of their fellow elf from the face of the earth of Fonrein and
her tribe. The elves then were to use the knowledge and power given
to them to become the stewards of the world and all its inhabitants.
The selfish surface elves failed to fulfilled the bargain because
instead of being stewards of the world and the Grand Forest, they
used magic to again build cities and structures that replaced the
Grand Forest, and the elves forsook their idyllic ways.
As punishment for their sins, the elves, the immortals, are cursed to
live in the shadow of humanity and to be thought of less than dwarves.
