Book 72 -- The Mysterious Lizardmen (last revised 11/23/02)
Greetings.
I am called Archaeo. Einsiedler asked me to put together some words
on lizardmen in the lands. The origin and history of the lizardmen
is shrouded in mystery, and the lizardmen shamans who do know tend to
guard any such knowledge. This may indicate why H'sshtiak is the
most prevalent Lizardman deity.
What I can say with confidence is that lizardmen at one time had a
much more advanced civilization than they now exhibit. The existence
of the ruins in Varna and many more in Samerien seem to indicate that
a Lizardman kingdom once was centered in or on Ciston. The ruins
show a race of high capacity for magic, building, and learning, but
also one of extreme violence and barbarism.
Whether the current state of the lizardmen is one of choice or
inevitable decline is still an open question. The numbers of
lizardmen in the lands are few, and they do not make a significant
impact on the society at large other than the occasional hero of some
repute. Most Lizardmen settlements are by water sources and coastal
areas.
The studies made on saurian and lizardmen anatomy shows that the two
races are very closely related, and their differences are one of
politics and not of nature. What ruins and secrets the saurian might
be hiding in the swamp are unknown to me. With the current state of
the world and the Swamp Lich's hegemony in Samerien, it might be
sometime before an answer is found.
